Chacha chaudhuri , Naagraj and Supercommando Dhruv are what came to my mind when I came to know about leisure reading.

Interesting thing about them was that they were invincible, intelligent and easy to comprehend. Or sometimes it could be Champak, Nandan and Chandamama.

And reading English for leisure was the remotest possibility. How could someone read english for fun?

Then I met some people who used to read Laurel Hardy, Famous Five and Archies comics. I found out that leisure had other languages as well.

Indians’ boast of immense literature which is kept in silos in libraries across India. It is now that these works of literature are getting visibility. Up till now they were to be mentioned only by politicians or academicians while delivering speeches/lectures. Or should we say , now it is that these are being read by more number of people?

‘Wear and old coat and buy a new book’. A saying, which emphasizes the worth of books.

However, we could not follow what is said. Indians had an old coat but no money to buy a new/old book. In fact they were not in a state of mind to want a book. If we go back to the pre-liberalization era(1991-92) we find that majority of Indians were earning to survive which reflected in every sphere of their lives. Government jobs were the major contributor to employment. The reputed profiles like IAS/IFS/IPS/IES were all examination based wherein candidates had no option but to slog for hours with books to realize their dreams of being driven in a red-light ambassador apart from enjoying the frills and perks which Administrative bureaucrats are showered upon. Books were a need then.

Post 1991, gradual changes occurred. Indians started meeting people from other cultures and psyche. They started working in cubicles and having coffee/tea through vending machines. Mc Donald’s and pizza corner caught the attention. All this was new to us. We started relishing the wealth. And of course, we were in a better position to appreciate the fine arts. No wonder, ‘Art Cinema’ became ‘Multiplex Cinema’ ; ‘vacations at Nani’s place’ turned into ‘expedition to Leh’ and ‘needing a book’ became ‘wanting a book’.

Unlike earlier, today majority of people read and discuss books. We are not referring to people who belong/ed to the educated strata which has/had a culture of reading books and literature. We are referring to the section which was oblivious of the fact that they can read books for leisure and self-improvement as well.

Although, we have been quite virtuous in the literary sense we could never have a monetary perspective about the Book business. For instance, Rabindranath Tagore always remained a matter of General Knowledge. How many people actually read his works apart from the chapters included in the school syllabus? The renowned writers had an elite stature but they lagged a fan following; like film actors had among masses. One of the major reasons which can also be cited is that Books and literature do not sell by mere advertisement through hoardings and pamphlets. It’s done only through word-of-mouth publicity. The book cover can only convince a reader more. It cannot make the reader ‘pay’ for the book, unless you have a fetish for books. So how to get the ‘mouth’ advertise for you? Either you write an extremely good book or you make the media/promotions work for you or else, do a mix. Lights on to the Storybook of India!

The trend was initiated when Salman Rushdie was awarded the Man Booker Prize for Midnight’s Children in ’81. A name from Indian Subcontinent receives a prestigious award has to be a news. But it was still a coffee table chat for the affluent. No market, no advertisement.

Post Rushdie, there was a lull before the storm. And it broke when Arundhati Roy was recognized next with the same award in ’97. This time India was in a much better position than the last time i.e. ’81. Media got some new stuff to write about, very similar to what happened in ’94 when Susmita Sen became the first Indian to Miss Universe. For newspapers it was like an opportunity to ride on the recent ‘explore more-spend more’ wave emanated from the western philosophy. So they told us more about Arundhati Roy. And of course the publishers IndiaInk left no stone unturned to promote the lady with the book. Arundhati Roy was projected more like the new women liberator rather than an author. A new market discovered , significant level of advertisement.

The books kept selling in India. The book stalls at the railway stations (one of the few places where Books/magazines are sold in large numbers ; but of course next to the ‘Chai’) suddenly started adorning names like Jeffrey Archer, Sydney Sheldon, etc. Not that these books were not being read earlier but they were definitely not being sold on railway stations. The reader who burnt the mid night oil in old libraries, schools, colleges had taken a casual approach towards reading. It was reading in trains, ‘locals’ and buses. And then came the ultimate change.

5 Point Someone: Engineering/Hostel life/Booze/Cigarettes/professor’s daughter/low grader but intelligent. A story around these was sure to be a success. But Chetan Bhagat made it even a bigger success with his diligent observations, one liners and a storyline which everyone wants to live. The book broke several records and was a must read for an engineering student. Later it was translated in other languages like Hindi, Gujarati, etc. The craze for the book was phenomenal and hence a huge potential market to milk. Chetan Bhagat and publishers left no stone unturned to use his MBA skills. He travelled across India; held events in malls where people could buy the autographed book and get a picture clicked with the author. Crossword, Flipkart and landmark all joined the chorus. In fact it was a huge opportunity for the air-conditioned bookstores to attract crowds from road side pirated books seller. More so, because the MRP of the book(95 INR) was uncongenial for pirates. The costing for piracy would not leave any margins for street vendors. And the 95 isn’t too much for a book which everyone’s reading. It’s an opportunity to join the bandwagon and Indians love doing that!

Meanwhile, several other authors too were getting into the mainstream of the book writing business. Apart from the forthcoming books by Chetan Bhagat, others like Rashmi Bansal(connecting the dots), Kaavya Vishwanathan(How Opel Mehta plagiarized a book) also were promoted to the front shelves of the bookstores. Some of the books which had already been a success got their sales in the aroused reading spree prevalent among Indians. For eg. Monk who sold his Ferrari ( Robin S Sharma) & Alchemist(Paulo Cohelo). For promotions Robin S Sharma’s India visits were reported in newspapers and magazines.

MBA entrances exams too were contributing. Otherwise, people can’t read a descriptive and philosophical book like Atlas Shrugged or Fountain Head for no reason.

A clear indicator of a growing demand is always the Piracy Industry. Pirates deal in Films, Music and softwares/computer gaming; all three are highly prone to piracy only because of the demand for them. No wonder, you find books being sold on traffic signals. A clear indicator of the grown demand. And its good for the books’ industry. Like what piracy did for Microsoft , the same will happen for books. Piracy might seem to eat into the shares of publishing houses but it’s doing more good than damage. Let people get addicted to reading. Await a day when people read a book over the long weekend. And then the books will sell with much better margins than ever.

So finally, the stage is set for writers.

Growing levels of education and awareness in India is the first Promotion for books. As we get more educated, the bestsellers will be included in the school curriculum as well.

Upcoming bookstores are the second promotion enablers. We have a place to put posters for the forthcoming editions/novels. Bookstores that are placed in Malls and shopping complexes having high footfall.

And let the piracy play its role. Not only has it awakened the slumbering politicians , it has also captured another scenario which makes me ponder upon.

the maturing Indians.

Politicians(the opposition and the others);

They surely have realized the impact of public which no more can be ignored. They do understand that the public is quick to respond to anything which requires their attention. The story of Internet & technology touching upon the lives of people is too old to reiterate. Probably now it is when we can see the real benefits of internet and technology. At least we can expect our politicians to upgrade themselves on technology forefront. They now, surely realize how blinded they can be by ignoring the basics of the new generation. At least, we can expect a better educated political class for the days to come which can read our tweets.

Common man;

Though the common man has already been dealt in the previous point, s/he is too important to not have a dedicated slot.

The acting government;

They are trapped for sure. Not only are they up against a clean public figure , with every dawn they are facing the increasing exasperated populace. In fact to be fair with this government, this situation was unmanageable for any political party. But one thing which i have been keenly observing is the way they are holding on to their guns(the active government). This is not to applaud what they are doing. This is just to throw some light on a byproduct of this agitation. A matured political setup. The government might be accused of pushing the dust under the carpet, it has still dared to deal this agitation with a matured outlook. They are still communicating to the public that 'hunger strikes' are not the right way to set things right. And there are people who second that.

An easy way out could have been to agree to the demands. Let the lokpal bill fly and deal with it as and when it comes backfiring. And we all know how tricky a politician can be to dodge a bill/bills. I don't appreciate the UPA goverment for what they are doing but the way they are handling things does augur a matured government set up in the days to come. Or may be these are the good times when the politicians have realized that no more they can run this country with dodge games.

I am still unsure how to end this .All i can think of is;

In God, we trust... errr.... in God can only, we trust.

delhi winters and chai..

its not unusual when you start deriving vicarious pleasures from something.
In fact it is this virtual experience which enables you to strive through hard times, especially when you are working towards converting the virtual to reality.

2-3 days back i woke up ; it was a weekday and had to go to office. for the morning tea i had to go to the tea stall near my home as we ran out of gas. Seven in the morning and you find school kids going to school, hand in hand with their mummy papa .. auto rickshaw drivers watching people coming out of their homes and speculating their chances of getting this passenger for their first fare.tea stalls are already in full swing by then, because thats when people need tea the most.

its a very fresh feeling to see the start of the day. in decembers, mumbai gives you a tinge(mind you, only a tinge) of delhi. mornings are similar and nights too.. what happens between these two is poles apart from what delhi experiences in december :)

the sunlight was at just the right angle. i was sipping the morning tea at t stall and observing all this. They dont make good tea in mumbai, trust me.. have no clue what they put in their tea but its tastes highly inorganic and chemically treated.. they call it 'cutting ' ..

some places are exception though.. my office pantry serves awesome tea.. right amount of ginger and sugar and milk..

thats it.. nothing else to put here.. there nothing else which mumbai gives me when i am missing delhi.. :(

composure...

I wish i could sport the composure ,shown by this flight captain ..
amazing it is !!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VyiHRq-wX8U&feature=related

<img style="display:block; Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are younot to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.<span class="qc" style="font: normal normal normal 2.2em/normal Verdana, Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; color: rgb(117, 105, 33); In fact it would slip in your bed while you dreaming. And sleep peacefully. You too would not mind it , considering how cold it is outside and that the leopards are out looking for preys in the night. Leopards kill dogs, one of the guys there told us.

The isolated hut was among 3 other huts put on the top of that mountain. If you go downhill for any reason; be it a stroll or cigarettes/liquor, you ought to ask the cook(Jungi da, if i am not mistaken) if there is any necessary item to be brought to the kitchen(grocery, etc.).

There was no electricity there. Only a genset to fetch water. everything else was un-electric.

Probably that is what gave that place a distinct feel. They told us that during winters foreigners throng this place to sit in solace. Foreigners from Israel, Italy, France. They smoke pots and remain high every time.

At night they made aaloo pyaaz parantha in dinner. Jundi da served it. They said Jungi Da is the coolest and most contended person alive, at least in nainital. He would reject a bag full of money for the life he is living now. Torn and shabby clothes. All this man wants is his two pair of trousers and some shirts gifted/given away by guest foreigners, a glass to put in some desi/vilaaiti daaru or some tea and beedis which he always puffed irrespective of what he was doing.

One of them put some whiskey in a tapri glass and sipped. He was humming 'Ma rewa' from Indian ocean. That was the next best thing you could listen to after listening to Indian Ocean Live.

Later , one of them asked us if we wished to sit out and look for the leopard. We agreed. While we were sitting there, they lighted some stuff(ganja/marijuana/?? whatever!!). I could see that weed is part of their lives in mountains. Shiv ji too used to have it with Parvati ! Then one of them said with hushed tone, "dekho Udhar!! Woh us taraf, saamne!! "

And it was there... two eyes looking towards us. very similar to the cat's eyes; the way they illuminate in the dark. Still .. Rock Still.. And then they lighted up their search torch to shoo him away.. And instantaneously they disappeared...

<span It's really that simple."

-Will Smith,

free !

I am free !!!

No , i am not referring to the freedom which is fundamentally granted to me. I am talking about the current status i have in the office. Recently deputed into some other profile, i am basically free. Everyday i sit in my office and listen people talking to others on phone or gossiping about each other. It has helped me to assess them and hence plan my attitude at the workplace.

Whatever it is but this new office life is also very interesting. Prior to this i used to roam around, meet clients and come back home. Now I am supposed to sit at one place and work with a team. And when you ask them the reason they are quick to respond that its better than orkut.

However there has not been one single instance when i felt that facebook was making it easier for me interact with my friends. Now its a personal take and people might differ but heres what i have to say >>

* first of all i find facebook very difficult. Its like understanding something new for no good.

for example : lets say i log into the FB site. The first thing i find is the whole package of unnecessary information (rather data) all over my screen [ like; 'ABC gifted a teddy to XYZ' , ' PQRS is happy today' , " MNO just found out his friend for the day' , ' wxy commented on EFG's photograph',] . Now this data, is all useless to me. Why would i like to know how is ABC treating XYZ; if he is gifting a teddy or a fresh cabbage to him is of no concern to me.. and even if i would be interested to know it, i will definitely call my friend or he/she will call me. I don't want to know how is everyone gifting and treating each other with the help of virtual bouquets/hugs/smiles and rest all items in the FB kitty.

* Secondly, I think FB is very confusing too. If i wish to write anything to my friend, i have an option of a WALL. A wall which is too big to keep anything personal or even little unreachable. I mean, i don't mind people reading my messages to my friends. But please do not paint them on a stupid wall which is intentionally made very public. I guess orkut does a very handsome job here. People who are free enough to read messages scribbled on some one's page can do it only if the take pains to get inside others profile and read the messages which were not meant for them. In fact to ensure that you have a privacy, you can easily set the privacy option and disable any user to read the scraps not meant for them. So here's a very customized option available with orkut.

* thirdly , I am prejudiced towards orkut because it is owned by Google, of which i am a fan. Simply because Google is awesome and a smart way to do things.

While concluding , i can only say that FB might be the talk of the town, but eventually its the robust and simpler things which win. Yes! the variably sized display picture which you can put on the FB home page is one of the things people admire( in orkut there is only standard size which is possible) and FB scores over Orkut when it comes to the texture and over all lookout; but the sheer simplicity and clarity in Orkut is overwhelming.

One of the prime advantage Orkut has is the fact that Indians got addicted to Orkut well before the advent of FB. And that everything in Orkut seems to be more simple and clear.

Whatever the reason is, i am a fan of Orkut.

I am not sure if , by now , FB must have published it on my FB wall ' shwetank sharma has become a fan of Orkut'

[:)]

भारतीय रेल

The first time when i was informed that the rail budget is announced separately i.e. it is not contained in the annual budget for that nation, i could not realize the reason. It is now , when i travel so extensively in trains, that i understand the need for a separate rail budget.
The behemoth network of two parallel rails running across the entire nation requires a dedicated planning and budget allotment. I want to read a book on Indian railways. trains have been an integral part of my life. I boarded them when i was in school , college and now in the industry. The uniformity and seldom irregularities you find in the entire system of railways is worth noticing and reading.

i append an incident which happened at railway station.

Last week while i was coming from Indore to Vadodara, i had to wait for my train in a waiting hall. (Indian railways have taken up an initiative by constructing air conditioned waiting halls in major railway stations). There was another bunch of passengers waiting for their respective trains. Out of all the trains which run from Indore there are three trains which i have been noticing since last two months during my travel to Indore. One is Jammu tawi - indore express. This train reminds me of my home town and tats why it has got a mention here.

Second is Indore-pune. this train leaves at around 2:30 from the station.

Third one is my train i.e. Avantka express.

That day was the day before diwali.

Passengers of indore pune train were irate. Their train was 9 hours late. Imagine how bad you feel when you reach the station to board a train , to travel to your home for Diwali ; and then you are told that your train is late by 9 hrs. It is bad.

Luckily it was not my train.

People were making alternate arrangements. Bus and Air were the two options.

I could only sympathize with them. There were two people sitting next to me. They were to board my train. They worked in Indian railways. So it was obvious for me to quench my curiosity about Indian railways. And they reciprocated my gesture. They told me about some technical and managerial procedures about railways.

About the current scenario, they were of the opinion that the train which had just reached indore (9 hrs late) and would be finally leaving for Pune , should be made available in a short span. They told that , normally it takes 6-9 hrs for a train get ready for the next journey(there are certain mandatory checks that are to be performed). So this train will be made available only after 6-9 hrs , and thus make the train run around 9 hrs run behind schedule. However , the two gentleman contended that the train could be made available within 3-4 hrs provided it was done so with an intention to make it happen(the checks to be made can be done quickly). So 6-9 hrs duration can be constrained to 3-4 hrs in times of need.

I appreciated their concern for something which they were not responsible for. At least they were contributing healthily towards a solution for a problem.

And there was another elderly gentleman in the waiting room who was under delusion that he has got some real innovative ideas.

He suggested that all trains which were available at the Indore station currently should be contributing in this fix. Now hear this... " they should take out one coach each from all the available trains and attach it with a spare engine. And the train would be ready to accommodate people for Indore-Pune journey"

And then he cribbed that Indian system is so corrupt and that there should be some youngsters who should protest against this rotting system; and that today's youth lacks the 'AAKROSH' ...

After the most anguished diatribe he could deliver, he left the waiting room because his son had already booked Air tickets for his 'army retired' father.

I wont comment on this small incidence, but probably i can say this.

We should only comment on something about which we know certain things( or we have worked on it to know it). Detaching so many compartments from so many trains and making a new temporary train may solve problem for the Indore-Pune passengers but put a lot other people in trouble. Where will those passengers be adjusted whose compartments were detached to make the new train?? How will those TC manage all the clamouring passengers whose seats were cancelled..??

Probably the elderly gentleman did not have any answers to these obvious questions. And had i dared to put these questions in front of him , i am sure , he would have easily said " its not my job to devise further solutions, Its the Indian railways who are responsible , and let them work on it"....

In a nutshell, if you are unhappy about something then you may express your emotions.Let the concerned people do their job. They will devise some solution. After all they have been working with these system for so many years. Don't let the expression of anguish be so meaningless and unwanted that it simply creates noise.

Noise , which is termed as pollution now a days..

जिसका काम उसी को साजे,

और करे तोह बंदर लागे !!!

being lethargic

Being lethargic...

I am lethargic, lazy and slow.

And this is only for the activities which are probably most important in my life.

So , if tomorrow I am supposed to rise early and leave for office, its herculean for me to perform.

No.. its not because i don't like to wake up at time. Neither it is because of escapism from my responsibilities. I believe there are very few people in this world who avoid their responsibilities. They all know whats important for them.

But , what is it that retards me when i approach these important daily tasks. I believe its the desire to achieve quick results. I will be very quick in getting up from sleep and dress up for a movie, even if i was informed at a short notice.

My body's response to this urgent requirement of getting up and defying the 'law of laziness' would be astounding.

Whats the reason for this new life which i gather to get ready for the movie?

Well, the answer could be only one. And it is, the quick enjoyment i receive after putting in effort ,in getting ready for the movie. The quick enjoyment while watching the movie.

I could foresee, rather my conscience(which is also very mean, like me... by the way , i consider my conscience and myself two different entities.. my conscience advised me to do so) helped me to foresee the pleasure of watching a movie with pop corns and cold drink. And the attractive part of the incentive is that i will get all the pleasure in an hour, as soon as i reach the cinema hall.

hence, this is it. I have found it. I do everything quickly which ensures a quicker result. Otherwise, things are quite different in my pace to do things.

Take another example-

If i feel, someday, that i need to shed some weight, i will decide to wake up early in the morning and jog for some time. Now , this ain't difficult for me. in fact I am a morning person. I generally wake up early. But to perform this task of getting up and jogging will be a challenge.

Simply because of the fact that i am not getting the result of 'losing my weight' quickly. It will take a long time to happen. An uninterrupted rhythm of waking up early and going for a jog. So, it will never happen that i maintain a habit of jogging.

In a nutshell,

a man is always guided by his thirst of quicker results. It is seldom that a man realizes the worth of continued effort. And when he/she realizes ,it is often too late. May be, the men who comprehend this truth( and most importantly.implement it in their lives, because we all know the truth. Its just that we don't implement it) and selflessly(to a certain extent) imply it in their routines that they taste success. Otherwise, its only a game of chance. You win or lose, depending on which day is it today.

आलस बुरी बला है !! इससे दूर रहे ...

roger federer...

Roger Federer.. It was a mere act of God for me. In fact i never paid any attention to the question "whether i should hate or like rains?". For a common man, rain is welcomed if he/she is sitting in the peace of home, snacks, tea and TV. Else , its a disturbance. Disturbance to his whole schedule. You come out of your home and find the muddy drenched roads. Wear a slipper or fold up your pants.. the pants will get soiled. I wonder how difficult it is for a door to door salesman to sell in the rainy season( worse if he has to sell something which has to be sold dry). And this comparison energises me for the next day... coz i know that i have the luxury of an a/c cab and thus no reasons to complain...
Happy selling...

Goa does business

its not easy to digest the fact that Goa does business; not for me atleast.
Of late, i have been traveling to Goa for business trips. When i started , i was sceptical about the probablity of business in Goa. I wondered, who would run business in Goa( you need real astutes,to run a business!!; and how do i expect to find some in goa??)...
After all Goa is all about liqour, dance, party, fishes and seas...
Now my prespective has changed. Infact i feel that i was wrong but .. partially..

I have many people there.
and one thing i found common is the need for money( which is quite obvious).
Now, the unique thing about this behaviour is the attitude with which money is desired.
They are still having a laid back attitude. And they dont change.
It is all to do with the pace with which the city moves. Grocery stores open at around 8-9 but showrooms at around 11-12(quite normal..).. but then the afternoon approaches and shops are again shut for atleast 2-3 hours.. may be its there lunch time(but who does a lunch in 3 hrs.??)..
and when its night.. goans call it a day quite early..By 9 it seems 1130...
and this is Panjim i am refering to,the capital.. Dont know what happens in rest of Goa..
I am unhappy with this attitude of Goans.. It retards my desire to do business there..
HOWEVER- I also feel good about it.. I enjoy the casual approach toward life. I relate it to my college days when my only motif was to pass the exam.. and stay in college an then find a job..
The portuegese culture gives Goa a different tinge than other states, greenry is all around.. and most importantly people are good. Heart warming and pleasing( but it seems ,now they too are learning the tricks of the trade...haha..).. i will continue with this blog. some time later

mumbai destiny

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5349809285302519266" style="FLOAT: right;
